Barbeque and Borders

Today’s plans originally called for 9am BODYPUMP followed by engagement photos with a friend who is also a wedding photographer.

BODYPUMP happened, but the photos didn’t.

The weather looked like this.

001

And my eye looked like this.

003

I’m not sure if you can tell (I know I can) but my eye was itchy and red and swollen from some sort of skin irritation.  I was afraid that I’d be disappointed with how the pictures would turn out, so I postponed until October which is the next date that works for the three of us.

So, instead, Jeff and I went run a few errands and check out the new Famous Dave’s in Falls Church.  Jeff loves BBQ and I sort of like it ok (it’s not my favorite food genre) but I said we could go check it out once this new location opened.  And it just opened on Monday!

004

I think the menu has changed since the last time I went there because there were a lot more health-friendly options instead of what I remembered from last time:  beef + pig + corn + sausage all smothered in BBQ sauce.

We tested out all the different flavored BBQ sauces and I decided I liked the Sweet & Zesty the best.  Jeff likes his women things hot and spicy, so he preferred Wilbur’s Revenge (labeled XXX).

I ordered the Citrus Grilled Shrimp platter which was about 10 or 12 grilled shrimp, steamed broccoli and grilled pineapple.  It was outstanding!

011

The broccoli was a little salty but let’s be honest, steamed broccoli needs a little something to give it a lift. I was a big fan of the meal and it was 11 points+.

   012

Jeff ordered some sort of wing + sausage combo and decided to get the Wilbur’s Revenge sauce on his wings.

 014

He immediately regretted this decision.

We’re talking, can’t-feel-your-lips, hands-shaking, did-I-just-have-a-stroke hot.  He said those wings were the hottest thing he’s ever eaten.  That says a lot.  I even love wings and I refused to eat one, despite his prodding.

Anyway, we left lunch and as we were leaving, I asked him if there was anything else we needed to do while we were out.  Somehow, the Hyundai found itself on auto-pilot to the Borders across town.

015

We totally did it again.

017

This location was a bit bigger than yesterday’s and had a lot more selection, so our take was even more killer today.

016

To help lessen the bankruptcy losses, I bought:
Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club by Gil McNeil
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
Believe It, Be It by Ali Vincent  (Biggest Loser winner)
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman
Deep Down True by Juliette Fay
If You Were Here by Jen Lancaster
Not Ready For Mom Jeans by Maureen Lipinski
Quantum Wellness by Kathy Freston
Lost and Found by Geneen Roth
The Making of a Princess by Claudia Joseph (all about Kate Middleton)

(Don’t judge.)

(Wait, you can judge.)

(But it was less than $2.  Cheaper than an issue of US Weekly!)

The Flexitarian Diet by Dawn Jackson Blatner
The Food of a Younger Land by Mark Kurlansky
Hector and the Search for Happiness by Francois Lelord
Losing Mum and Pup by Christopher Buckley

And those errands we did before lunch?  Yeah, we went to Goodwill to drop off old clothes and we just had to stop in to look at the books.

In the name of supporting job training, I bought:
The Girl who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson
The Widow Clicquot by Tilar J. Mazzeo
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

Phew.

Anyway, I’m taking the rest of the afternoon off to play around with my huge piles of books!

Enjoy your Saturday!

Do you like BBQ?  Are you more of a Memphis, Texas or Carolina BBQ sort of person?   I like BBQ sauces that are sweet and ketchup based, not vinegar or mustard based.  But my favorite is a good juicy brisket with no sauce at all!

Oooh…jealous! It is sad that Borders is closing, but those close-out sales would be so fun! I do love BBQ, but there are not a lot of places around me that serve the authentic stuff (maybe that’s a good thing?).
