Slackin’ on the recaps

I haven’t actually recapped the last few books I’ve read.  So I’m going to do a quick one here.  [note: I hate it when people say, "Give me the Readers Digest version."  Yes, you are dating yourself by saying that and no, I've never subscribed to Reader's Digest so I don't actually know what that means.  I infer you mean the quick version?   Is Reader's Digest full of summaries of stories?  What's the fun in that? It's like someone telling you a big boat hits an iceberg and calling it Titanic.  You miss all the good stuff.]

So, I read Skinny Bitch, Twenties Girl and Bitter is the New Black.  I liked them all enough and they all read pretty quickly which was pretty much the point of choosing those books.  I also started The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance and 2/3rds of the way into it, I really like it.

I did also realize that I have a thing for memoirs.  I think I actually like them better than novels.  Bitter is the New Black is a memoir of unemployment, TNYRMSHD is a memoir of being a young morman 20-something in NYC which is a little challenging when it comes to dating.  I loved the James Frey novels, I loved The Happiness Project, I loved Straight Up and Dirty

Twenties Girl was…. good, I guess… but I think I’ve outgrown Sophie Kinsella.  I don’t think I’ll buy her next book any time soon.  It just felt a little banal.  I think if I had read it when I was 25, I would have appreciated it more.  Oh well.

Bitter is the New Black was loud, obnoxious and heartwarming.  I love Jen Lancaster and in order to appreciate her work, you have to know that most of her over-the-top abhorrent behavior is tongue in cheek.  I read so many reviews on GoodReads that made her out to be so self-absorbed and untolerable… I just think they missed her point.

Skinny Bitch was super hot in 2005 because Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham) swore by it.  I have to say, it had a bunch of good healthy eating tips but nothing I haven’t heard before.  Eat cleanly, avoid junk, be kind to the earth.  Pretty straightforward.  I think the whole “bitch” part was just to get your attention. Sure got mine in the $1 bin at Goodwill.

So I’m down to my last actual book that has to be selected.  #30.  Still haven’t decided what kind of book this should be, but I’m working on finishing those others that I had put aside over the year… I think there are 4 of them…?

For now, I’m headed out for a run.

I love Bitter is the New Black. I remember picking it up without knowing anything about her and after the first chapter I was about ready to quit, but I kept reading and fell in love!
