The other day, I found myself meandering through our local Giant grocery store on my way home from the gym. I think this is one of my favorite pasttimes, grocery shopping when I’m hungry, that is, because I seem to do it a lot. Sometimes I make delicious, healthy choices and sometimes I make knee-jerk choices (Yes, I do need gummy bears, thankyouverymuch) but mostly I grab those couple few items that I inevitably forgot on the big Weekend Grocery Trip.
I love the Giant because a) it’s the grocery store I grew up with, literally it being across the street from my parents’ house and b) the one in Arlington is walking distance to my apartment. This particular one is nothing special, but I think I just have brand loyalty because of the fact that anytime we went to the store as kids, it was the Giant. [I also have extreme brand loyalty to Under Armour but that's a story for another day.]
Depending on my schedule that day, I sometimes dart in and out quickly, only seeking the items I neeeeed and sometimes I take a moment to peruse the things I usually gloss over.
Well, one of my favorite things is to check out the scratch n’ dent discount bin and the trip the other day was no exception.
Now, I’ll say this for sure — you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes the selection is total crap (no I do NOT need a corncob kernel scraper) but sometimes you hit discount-bin gold.
Like a big 28 oz. can of organic tomatoes …

For just about a buck!

Ingredient list: Organic tomatoes, organic tomato puree (water, organic tomato paste), sea salt, naturally derived citric acid, organic basil.
Or you might find enough Brown Rice to last the better part of a year….

Ingredient list: Long Grain Brown Rice.
I used the crushed tomatoes to create a homemade naan pizza the other day and it was so flavorful and delicious. It was so much more better than any pre-packaged tomato sauce!
Clean eating and organic eating don’t have to start at gourmet grocery shops. It just takes a little meandering!
Now if you don’t mind, I have some gummy bears waiting.
